 Deer

The deer population has rapidly increased on Kuchinoerabu-jima. This has had adverse effects on agriculture and vegetation levels of evergreen broad-leaved forests. In order to better grasp the situation, the Kuchino-Erabu senior group have begun to estimate the deer population by counting deer along certain routes.

 Counting by YOCA

In 2009, YOCA (Yakushima Overall Conserving Association) counted deer along several routes (Table ). To estimate the deer population, YOCA counted deer excrement in forests to provide an estimate the deer population.
